DIY: Distressed Denim and Cutoff shorts

For as long as I can remember I have received questions about my ripped jeans and cutoff shorts. I never really bothered to do a post on it because I always felt like it's something super easy that anyone can do, but a few days ago I went thrifting with my mom and bought a few pairs of jeans to play with and test some things out on. A good pair of distressed jeans/cutoff shorts can cost you at least $50 but with these tips and tricks you can have the same look for $10! Just grab a pair of old jeans you already have or purchase some from your local thrift store and you're on your way!

Tools that you will need are a good pair of fabric scissors, a seam ripper or knife, a utensil for marking, and tweezers.

Grab a few pair of your favorite jeans and just take a moment to decide what you want to do with them. Remember, once you cut something you cannot add it back on, there are tons of ways and styles of distressing so know your options.

Lay a pair of jeans on a flat surface and use a marker to mark where you want to cut them. It's always safe to start off kind of long because you can always go back and take off more.

Once you have the jeans cut to your liking, use a seam ripper or something sharp to cut slits in your jeans. It doesn't have to be perfect, but remember however wide/long you do the slits will be the size of your rip. Next, use your tweezers to pull out the small white threads in your denim.

Finally, wash and dry your new shorts or distressed jeans and voila! You have a new pair of shorts for the summer.
